MEDITATION AND FERTILITY - Dr Prashant Joshi IVF Specialist Doctor /Fertility Specialist at Jayanagar Bangalore
Meditation has been shown to have numerous benefits for both physical and mental health, and recent studies suggest that it may also be beneficial for fertility.
One study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility found that women who participated in a mindfulness meditation program had higher rates of pregnancy compared to those who did not. The study included 185 women who had been trying to conceive for six to 36 months. Half of the women were randomly assigned to a mindfulness meditation program, while the other half received standard infertility treatment.
After six months, the women in the meditation group had higher pregnancy rates compared to those in the standard treatment group. The researchers suggest that meditation may help reduce stress and anxiety, which can interfere with fertility.
Another study published in the Journal of Women's Health found that women who practiced yoga had better reproductive outcomes compared to those who did not. Yoga is a form of meditation that combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation.
The study included 33 women who had been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common hormonal disorder that can interfere with fertility. The women were randomly assigned to a yoga program or a control group. After 12 weeks, the women in the yoga group had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as improved menstrual regularity and ovulation.
While more research is needed to fully understand the connection between meditation and fertility, these studies suggest that practicing mindfulness meditation or yoga may be a helpful addition to traditional fertility treatments. By reducing stress and anxiety, these practices may improve reproductive outcomes and increase the chances of conception.
