Prolactin test in infertility

Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that is involved in the regulation of various bodily functions, including milk production in nursing mothers, fertility, and the immune system. Elevated levels of prolactin can interfere with ovulation and cause infertility in women and men. In women, high levels of prolactin can disrupt the normal menstrual cycle and prevent ovulation, leading to infertility. It can also cause other symptoms, such as irregular periods, milk production in non-nursing women, and decreased libido. In men, high levels of prolactin can reduce testosterone levels and lead to decreased sperm production and infertility. It can also cause other symptoms, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and breast enlargement. Therefore, measuring prolactin levels can be useful in evaluating the causes of infertility in both men and women. If elevated prolactin levels are detected, further testing and treatment may be necessary to address the underlying cause and improve fertility.
